1. Organize Your Supplies

To get started, you’ll need the following materials and supplies:

  • One or more packs of tissue paper
  • A gift bag that fits the gift and is suitable for the occasion
  • The gift
  • Embellishments (Bow, ribbon, ornamental tie-ons, photos, flowers, candy, etc)
  • Scissors (optional)

When choosing tissue paper, you may want to opt for multiple packs. If you plan to wrap your gift first, you can do so with a few sheets of white tissue and then use two or more colored tissue sheets that complement the colors on your gift bag.

If you plan to embellish the gift bag with curled ribbon, you’ll need pre-curled ribbon, or use scissors to curl it yourself.

2. Wrap the Gift (Optional)

If you’re wrapping the gift before placing it in the gift bag, this is the time to do it. If not, just skip down to the next step.

Wrap the gift loosely in white or multicolored tissue paper. If the gift is fragile, you can use multiple layers of tissue paper for padding. You can tape the tissue paper over the gift, but it’s not necessary.

3. Open the Tissue Sheets for Volume

Using a flat surface (recommended), separate and open each sheet of tissue paper. This adds volume and appeal to the paper.

Take care with this step because tissue paper is thin and easy to tear.

4. Alternate Layers of Tissue Paper

Once you’ve opened the tissue paper, lay out a few sheets horizontally. Now, lay another set of sheets over the first stack vertically. You can alternate these layers with different colors for a wow factor if you prefer.

Note: If your gift bag is small, you may need to trim the tissue paper or cut the sheets in half. Just make sure you leave enough paper to stick out of the top of the bag.

5. Arrange the Tissue in the Gift Bag: 3 Methods

Now, here comes the nitty-gritty on how to put tissue paper in a gift bag so that it looks appealing and not like a mess of wadded up paper.

There’s a variety of ways you can do this, but here are three simple, popular methods.

A. Quick and Easy Method

If you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to create an artsy arrangement, you can simply bunch a couple of sheets of the tissue lightly over the gift.

Take care not to overwork the tissue paper as this can wrinkle or tear it. If you prefer more volume, add more sheets of tissue paper.

B. Funnel Shape Method

Smooth out one tissue sheet on a flat surface. Place your forefinger and thumb over the center point of the paper, and with a quick flick of your wrist, pick up the paper. This creates a funnel shape.

If needed, use your other hand to even out the flared section in a downward motion. Gently place the cone-shaped end inside the gift bag. Repeat this method a few times with coordinating colors. Voila! You now have an impressive gift bag.

C. Fan Shape Method

The fan shape makes a beautiful arrangement. Lay out a single sheet of tissue paper. Grasp each side (horizontally or vertically) at the same time and gather them together in the middle as if you were making a paper butterfly.

While holding the tissue paper in your non-dominant hand, use the other hand to gently tug on each side of the paper’s edges so that it creates pleats. After this, the tissue paper should resemble a fan on each side. Fold both sides together to make an even larger fan.

Now, you can tuck the “fan” into the gift bag. Repeat this method a few times with alternating colors and you’ll have a lovely, finished product.

How do you make gift wrap bags? 7 Steps

Don’t have a gift bag on hand? If you have leftover gift wrap paper tucked away in storage, you can make a gift bag from it with these easy steps.

Before you get started, you’ll need:

  • Gift wrapping paper
  • Scissors
  • Clear tape
  • Ribbon (optional)
  • Hole puncher (optional)
  1. Roll (or spread) out the gift wrap paper. Place the gift on top of it to measure how much paper you need. You want the bag to be twice the size of the gift.
  2. Cut the wrapping paper in a square or rectangle size so that it fits the gift.
  3. Place the paper on a flat surface with the white side facing up. Fold both the right and left sides inward so that they meet in the center. Tape over the seam.
  4. Fold the bottom part of the bag-to-be upward. Take this folded section and open it so that you can see the inside of it. Then, flatten the corners to create an elongated diamond shape.
  5. Fold the top and bottom corners so that they meet together in the center of the diamond shape. This should resemble the bottom of a paper lunch bag. Tape all the folded edges.
  6. Flip the bag upside right and place the gift inside. Fold the top edge over smoothly.
  7. Punch holes in the folded edge of the bag’s top and loop a ribbon through the holes.
Tip: Insert a piece of cardboard in the bottom part of the bag if you want more sturdiness.

How do you line a box with tissue paper?

Lining a gift box with tissue paper is easy peasy with the following steps.

  1. Simply fold a sheet of tissue paper so that it’s the same width as the box. (Hint: You can place the box on top of the tissue paper beforehand and lightly trace it with a pencil to give you the exact width of the box.)
  2. Gently place the tissue paper into the bottom of the box so that the long ends drape over the edges of the box. (If you have a wide box, you may need to use two sheets of tissue paper.)
  3. If you want to create a cushion for a fragile gift, just take a couple of pieces of tissue paper and lightly scrunch them so that they fit neatly into the bottom of the box. Then, fold another tissue sheet into a smooth square (or rectangle). Place this over the “cushion” and tuck the edges underneath.
  4. Place the gift in the center of the cushion. If you prefer, you can lay another folded sheet of tissue over the gift here.
  5. Now, take each long end of the tissue paper that’s draping over the box edges and fold it over the top of the gift. For a tidy look, fold the ends of these long edges inward about 2 or 3 inches.
  6. Give it a professional finishing touch by placing a sticker, round dot, or a golden seal over the spot where the two long ends of the tissue paper meet together over the gift. Now you’re ready to wrap the box with gift wrap paper.
